For this week’s read I delved into Malinda Lo’s sci-fi paranormal book Adaptation. I will admit that it was not my initial book I was planning to talk about but sadly it did not keep my attention and I felt that I was reading the book out of order. Despite the book being the first in the series. So I put down that one and picked up this one, hoping for a better reading experience and I was not disappointed. Read the rest of this entry »

Review/Friday 56/Book Beginnings: Shadowplay by Laura Lam

The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda’s Voice. Here’s the rules:

*Grab a book, any book. Don’t grab your FAVOURITE book, but whatever is closest.

*Turn to page 56.

*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.

*Post it.

*

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted at Rose City Reader. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you’re reading.

Blurb:

The circus lies behind Micah Grey in dust and ashes.

He and the white clown, Drystan, take refuge with the once-great magician, Jasper Maske. When Maske agrees to teach them his trade, his embittered rival challenges them to a duel which could decide all of their fates. People also hunt both Micah and the person he was before the circus—the runaway daughter of a noble family. And Micah discovers there is magic and power in the world, far beyond the card tricks and illusions he’s perfecting…

A tale of phantom wings, a clockwork hand, and the delicate unfurling of new love, Shadowplay continues Micah Grey’s extraordinary journey.

Shadowplay Promotion

Merry Christmas to everyone to celebrates this wonderful holiday!! I hope that your holidays have been filled with joy and wonder. And to my fellow Canadians, Happy Boxing Day! May your day be filled with either peace and quiet… or crazy shopping! For those unaware, Boxing Day is a huge shopping day for Canadian consumers. You can find great deals on things and if you get money (or gift cards) from loved ones as presents, it is a great time to use them since they may go farther then any other day. Personally myself, I stay home and away from the crazy shoppers.

Today’s post is going to be more about helping spreading the word about Laura Lam’s upcoming book Shadowplay, the sequel to her successful novel Pantonmime. You may recall I reviewed this book earlier this month (if not, check it out here), but recently she posted on her blog a heartfelt plea for people to help spread the word about this book. I encourage you to check it out.

To help promote the book, Laura has started posting teasers of the opening quotes from each chapter, plus a preview at the first couple of pages of Chapter One. Click here to read the teasers and check out the preview of Chapter One. Feel free to share the teasers across your social media networks!!  As well as that, follow her on her Shadowplay blog tour leading up to the release of Shadowplay. She will be visiting 23 blogs between December 20 and January 12.

I have posted below the pre-order links for the book (courtesy of Laura’s blog) but added two of my own for Canada. I would also like to suggest that you pre-order (or order) the book (if possible) from your local bookstore. While the chain bookstores are easiest for people to shop and order books, it is easy to forget the local bookstores who do not have websites. The book is scheduled to come out January 7 so you would not have to wait too long for it to come out!

Pre-order:

UK: Amazon – The Book Depository
US: Amazon – Barnes and Noble – Indiebound – Powell’s
Canada: Amazon – Indigo – KoboBooks (TBD?) – Mosacic Books
Australia: BookAdda
NZ: Fishpond

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you have a safe and wonderful holidays and I will see you all next time!!

Review: Pantomime

This book is one of the most talked about novels that came out in 2013: both as a young adult novel and as part of the LGBT genre. And for good reason! This novel deals with a question that many teens and adults deal with: Do I like men or women? Who am I attracted to the most? Which one do I prefer kissing the most? It is a question that our main character deals with throughout the book and does not have answers for at the end. But that is not the only question our main character has.

Despite what the description on the book would have you believe: Iphigenia “Gene” Laurus and Micah Grey are not star crossed lovers. They are not even siblings or cousins. They are one in the same person. Gene is her past life while Micah is his current life. Read the rest of this entry »
